The fourth resource is images, figures and portrayals ot distinguished men and other things, which are as useful to uneducated and illiterate people as wrriting is to the learned. When w e read history, on the other hand, an action is recalled to our m em ory as if through hearing. But as w e believe vision, by means o f w hich w e learn the various differences between things, to be a nobler sense than hearing, so w e show greater respect to pictures and images than to books. Vision is m oved by painting and portrayal, hearing by the book and reading.

W e have the exam ples o f the triumphal arches, the palaces o f kings, and churches dedicated to A lm ighty G od and decorated with the images o f Saints and the statues o f famous men, figures and panels. W hen w e see them, as i f in a m irror, we are spurred on to fo llo w in our ancestors' footsteps and attain fame and glory- equal to theirs. O n the o th er hand, it is clear that the b u ye rs o f side-al tar pieces w e re seen as p ro m o tin g th em selves in th em. B u t the p ro p rieto rial lab ellin g o f altars that seem ed m o st offen sive at the tim e w as th ro u gh the use o f h erald ic arm s, and it is in terestin g that this should be so, because there is here a direct co n tin u ity w ith the later p ortrait m ed al, w h ic h c o m m o n ly had arm s on the reverse.
